Turning Left
- Signal early
- Move further into the intersection before turning to allow for the trailer
- Swing wide so the trailer fully rounds the corner
- Adjust your lane position as you enter traffic
Turning Right
- Signal early
- Position your vehicle along the left edge of the lane
- Move forward until the front wheels are well beyond the edge of the curb
- Turn the wheel sharply to the right
- Adjust to a proper lane position as you straighten the wheel
Stopping
If possible, use a trailer with brakes that connect to your vehicles brakes. Regardless of the trailers braking capability, you will need more time and space to stop. Give yourself a greater margin to the front to prevent a collision.
Towing (In Traffic)
Remember that extra time and extra space are the keys to safe driving while towing. If you plan to pass a vehicle, you will need much more time and space to clear the vehicle and safely return to your lane. If you are being passed by a large vehicle, air turbulence may push your trailer to one side. Be aware and adjust your steering as necessary to stay in your lane.
